Parenthood "Everything Is Not Okay" Review: Emmys, Please Consider Monica Potter

Parenthood S04E03: "Everything Is Not Okay"

"The bad thing is already happening."

So we're all in agreement that Mae Whitman just played another character who convinced a kid without a chance in hell of winning to run for student body president, right? Way to go, Egg!

Do you feel like Max is starting to become a caricature? As this season progresses, it's been getting harder to tell if his tantrums are the results of his autistic perspective or if he's just a big baby. Obviously, I don't need every week to be a very special episode where Max is the center of attention, but freaking out about the vending machine (and, specifically, Skittles) sounds more like a diva who didn't get everything on her rider. I love Max to pieces, but with the focus shifted away from him to Kristina in that household, Parenthood is quick to turn to the fits for either comic relief or just plain relief.

I say relief because the current A-story is so terribly painful (in a good way) and Monica Potter is killing it right now. Last week I wasn't sure if this storyline was a good idea. This show exhibits what my buddy Noel calls "grief porn"—that is, Parenthood is a perfect blend of serious obstacles mixed with melodrama and characters that earn our empathy. So that's why you feel like you have dust in your eye every week. Or that you're cutting onions. Whatever you tell yourself.

The point is, I was a little afraid this would be too much. The family has brushed so often with emotional disasters in three years and cancer is almost like one of those topics people throw out there when they can't think of anything else. "We've done autism and homelessness and alcoholism. We've done engagements and splitting up and the Braverman Apocalypse. What's next?" "Well, there's always cancer." And everyone throws garbage at that writer.

That's what I felt. What I feel now is that Kristina, who has really ramped up in the last half-season or so, has been given a chance to take center stage, and she has done so beautifully. The scene where she pulled down her robe and looked at herself in the mirror, eyes welling up? I must have had an inflammation in my tear gland right then. Powerful stuff.

Plus, we can trust Parenthood with all the facets of the issue. It's not just going to be Kristina scared for an episode or two and then, pop, the cancer comes out and we move onto the next thing. Bravermans can't deal with things that way; everything they do has to be infected. I bash Adam a lot because I think he's the worst Braverman, but this week really identified the nuance of Adam's desire to simultaneously fix everything and do the right thing. It's a common issue of television marriages, "I don't want a solution, I just want you to listen," but it fits with Adam, who is Mr. Protector McFix-It, to only want to quickly find a solution and whisk his wife through the process rather than actually seeing that, in the time it takes to get into the process, she's understandably flooded with emotions and thoughts of mortality. Adam has to learn that not everyone takes solace in knowing they're doing something the right way and that everything else is out of their control. This is scary.

Which is what made the rest of the episode so interesting. Much in the same way that last week's episode was a little jokey, a little superficial, this week's episode was rife with sitcom fodder, too. From Max's vending-machine tirades to Zeek getting his old man license to Sarah constantly mentioning her annoying boss to Amber trying to clean up the burned coffee smell. They all had their Braverman twist (Max's obsession pushed his only friend away; Zeek's run-in with the law made him face his own age and mortality; Hank is clearly always on Sarah's mind, to Mark's chagrin; and Amber trying to please Adam came with a side of insecurity and feelings of inadequacy) but they are not nearly as heavy as what Adam and Kristina are going through. Or maybe that's just the Cancer Effect.

Of the four other stories, Sarah's was the most intruiging to me. The writers are slow-playing that hand despite the fact that everyone watching knows what's going on. Mark insisting on being in the picture was nothing but doom for him. We've already seen that Hank is at least attracted to Sarah (from his awesome conversation with Max) and she can't do anything but talk about him, so how long are we going to wait for Hank to make a move and for Sarah to have to make a decision? Granted, it's only been three episodes but he's also already been vulnerable in front of her (a little, about his failed marriage). It's only a matter of time before Sarah worms her way in and converts him to a Braverman. Like a virus.

So while Sarah wandered toward inevitable philandering, Max decided to run for student body president (find a blank tape to record your campaign video on, Max), and Zeek crushed the driving exam, they also all faced distractions they'll have to shrug off in order to move on. Sarah needs to put the Hank thoughts away for suspicious Mark. Max needs to cool it on the vending machines in order to keep his friend. And Zeek has to take solace in his good test score to distract him from feeling old.

Zeek dealing with his mortality provided one of the best shots in the episode that wasn't on Monica Potter or Mae Whitman. When Adam called him out on his heart flutter, Zeek turned to Adam and said, "I'm gonna be all right." Then, turning to look out into the night, he continued, "Then again you never know what's going to happen, do you?" Peter Krause has never looked more like a frightened child than he did standing next to a stone-faced Craig T. Nelson staring into the dark and considering the rest of his life. Adam is the kind of character who would bury himself in the minutiae of the cancer-curing process rather than actually face the real possibility of losing his wife. And possibly having to become Max's sole Skittles dealer.

– Max needs a reality check on what's fair. He really had to jump through some logistical hoops to find injustice regarding a hypothetical vending machine that no one in his present had access to.

– Also: who knew Max Braverman and Marshawn Lynch had so much in common?

– Gypsy (from Gilmore Girls) and Woody (from Psych) in the same episode? Two of my favorite side characters coming by for a visit. Now we just need Kirk.

– Micah is in a wheelchair AND he's Max's best friend? What'd this kid do to deserve such a crappy hand dealt to him?

– It makes perfect sense that Amber is the first family member to know about Kristina. She's the most trustworthy, emotionally stable, understanding person in the Braverman bunch. It's a wonder that she's not adopted (Season 5 storyline: switched at birth?). Also: Mae Whitman put in another amazing performance. This kid consistently makes my eyes sweaty every week.

– Yes, every way of explaining away crying I've used is from "I'm Not Crying" by Flight of the Conchords. Ha. Ha. Ha-ha. Haaaaaaaaa.

– If Kristina did stay with Dr Hariana, how long do you think it would take before Crosby created Braverman Apocalypse II: Oncologist Boogaloo?

– What's the over/under on the number of episodes before Sarah has to make that "important decision?"

– Will Emmy voters remember Monica Potter next summer? They seem to forget all about Mae Whitman.

– How involved in Max's campaign will Kristina be after being restricted by Haddie for hers?

– Do you think the Braverman siblings were blowing the Zeek situation out of proportion?

What to Watch This Weekend: Haven's Return, Boardwalk Empire, and the Emmys

Friday again, glad to see it. I hope you all plan on sleeping in this weekend because if that's the case I also hope that you plan on overloading your DVRs in order to pull all-nighter marathons of literally everything that's new on TV. There should really be a world record for the most new TV watched in one sitting, if there isn't already. Why don't you look that up while I tell you about this weekend's TV lineup?

What to watch on Friday, September 21...

8pm, Starz
Boss
In tonight's "Blackflash," Kane secretly, but willingly, heads off to a new and alternative clinic in order to find better treatments for his illness. At the same time, his intentions for the housing project don't exactly go as planned—rather, they lead to a whole lot of looting and rioting. Your move, Kane.

SERIES PREMIERE, 9pm, TLC
Secret Princes
You probably would have chosen a different show to feature here, but you know, just take a look at what we're working with. Friday nights aren't exactly on fire until Fringe and Community come back. And this is a new series, so you might as well know what it is. Basically, four actual princes from around the world—who all happen to be single and not super attractive—move to Atlanta of all places in order to find jobs and separate themselves from their royal pasts by pretending to be "regular." Oh, and also, they try to date... which means, they're going to try to find a woman who will then fly home with them to their native countries and live forever in love. Sounds totally doable, guys!

SEASON 3 PREMIERE, 10pm, Syfy
Haven
Rejoice! Here's a Syfy show I know you've all been waiting for. In the Season 3 premiere, Nathan and Duke are on the hunt for Audrey, but as the town begins to experience stranger events than ever before, everyone starts to wonder if it will lead to even more disappearances.

So, envision those events alongside a whole lot of dirt and a couple of dusty cowboy hats and you've got this week's episode!

SERIES FINALE, 10pm, Bravo
The Real Housewives of New Jersey
It's all over. Is it all over? Will somebody please tell me when it's over? What is it about New Jersey that just breeds obnoxious reality show stars? If you couldn't tell, I'm featuring this in celebration that this show is bidding us adieu for the time being. Its promos, which pretty much just feature incoherent yelling, will finally stop popping up during my commercial breaks. But let's be honest for a second: a lot of us love to hate this show so much that we actually also love to watch this show. So I'm including this in here for you fine, possibly ashamed, few. In the finale, "Strip Down to Memory Lane," the women attend the very same fashion show that ended in a wicked blowout last year. Sure, everybody wants to go in drama-free, but when Melissa runs into a guy she worked for during her stripper days, will that really be possible?

SEASON 3 PREMIERE, 10pm, HBO
Treme
The third season of HBO's New Orleans pseudo-tribute takes us all the way back to life in 2007. In "Knock With Me - Rock With Me" a neighborhood is stunned when the police react to a brass-band procession honoring a fallen musician, while Albert and Delmond struggle through the task of receiving reactions to their latest album. LaDonna looks for a way out of her new housing situation, Toni makes a friend while she pushes on in her battle for justice, and Janette (back in New York) reunites with Enrico Brulard. Lots to get caught up on, so you'd better start now!

SPECIAL REPORT: The Emmys What Are They? A Detailed Expos of Television's Oscars

This Sunday the nation of America and others will enjoy an annual tradition: The Primetime Emmy Awards. Most of the Hollywood actors will arrive wearing stylish fashions and quietly observe this year's host Jimmy Kimmel on the stage while literally millions of viewers do the same from the comfort of their homes or smartphones. But even though the Emmys have been held for over ten years in a row, a lot of people (including me) don't know what they are or who they are for. I hope this long-form journalistic inquiry will shed some light on one of Hollywood's most intriguing mysteries.

The main question people tend to have when they talk about the Emmys is, "What is an Emmy?" It is a good question and worthy of discussion. A Emmy is a treasure given to a Hollywood celebrity for all their hard work over that past year. The Emmys are basically TV's version of the Oscars or Golden Globes. Seems simple enough, right? But it's not always so simple! Here is an infographic that might make things more clear:

But the Emmys is about more than just a trophy or an angel of music. The Emmys is a celebration of the Hollywood television industry. All of the stars from our TVs get together in one room to enjoy a fun night out for once, and also give each other awards. The celebrities and stars also get to give speeches, which is like an award in itself. You know how we all sit and daydream about getting to attend our own funerals, but it's a paradox because when you are dead it is a dreamless sleep and you cannot experience anything, let alone a funeral? The Emmys are like that except you get to attend and make speeches to all of your friends and also sometimes there are mash-up skits where someone from one TV show will talk to someone from another TV show and it is funny because why are they in the same room all of the sudden? Things like that don't happen at funerals normally, especially not yours.

When it comes to the Emmy ceremony, an important thing to keep in mind is that there are literally hundreds of categories. They do this so that everyone will win at least one Emmy and nobody's feelings get hurt. In 1986 Gimme A Break's Nell Carter was denied an Emmy and she knocked down a bridge. Ever since then the Emmy voters have been careful to make sure everyone gets a trophy.

The Emmys have been around almost as long as television itself. Nobody really knows when televisions first came to exist, or what came first, the TV or the TV show? This remains a classic conundrum to this day. But we do know this: Both television and the Emmys began in the spring of 1978, and the latter was the brainchild of a bored Michigan housewife named Wendy Emmy who decided that there should be an event much like the Oscars, where awards would be bestowed upon all of her favorite stories. Thus, Ms. Emmy gathered up all of her friends from a local diner where she occasionally ate dinner by herself whenever her husband worked late, and they got to work planning the first-ever Emmys.

Unfortunately the road to the Emmys was not easy sailing. After a few heated disagreements over who should be nominated, including vicious shouting matches and at least one incident in which a seated woman kicked another seated woman in the mouth somehow, the Emmys committee disbanded for a three-year period. Wendy Emmy took a job at a marine sanctuary where she nursed a tuna back to health and meanwhile recruited a new Emmy committee, this time enforcing a strict No Tramps of Any Kind rule. Within weeks the first ever Emmys ceremony took place:

Although at the time there were almost no TV shows, the two that DID exist—Uncle Tampico and The Texaco Prancing Fancy Mystery Hour—swept most of the categories, including Best Drama Series, Best Comedy Series, and Most Caucasians (this category was admittedly an artifact of its time). The Emmys was a rousing success! It made the newspaper and everything.

Despite the fact that the very same committee continues to nominate and select Emmy winners to this day, much has changed. Whereas the first Emmy ceremony was located in the back room of Veronica Messer's Cotillion Hall in West Jamaica, Michigan, we all know that the Emmys have grown and expanded to a tremendous and elegant degree. Today, all of the celebrities gather at the crown jewel of Los Angeles's illustrious L.A. Live entertainment complex, the Nokia Theater:

This theater seats over a hundred people and you better believe all of them will be dressed in shiny clothing and crossing their fingers for an Emmy of their own! But celebrities, beware: Sometime in the '90s Wendy Emmy perished in a tragic marine sanctuary accident (she was mauled by a tuna) and her ghost is said to haunt the Nokia Theater to this day. Typically a Wendy Emmy haunting involves her spirit sneaking into the dressing rooms backstage and licking everybody's makeup, but a trickster at heart, she has also been known to high-pitched shriek directly into Ryan Seacrest's face for minutes on end.

Probably the most important element of the Emmys is WHO has won an Emmy anyway? A plethora of celebrity winners have brought home Emmys over the years, so here is a taste of the most notable ones:

Please consult Google or Bing to find a complete list of Emmy winners!

When it comes to the Emmys, sometimes it is more about who HASN'T won a Emmy than who has, especially for people who haven't won a Emmy. The list of deserving Hollywood actors who have been denied Emmys is long and outrageous, suggesting a sort of institutionalized discrimination such that this country has probably never experienced before. Please, when you are perusing this showcase of abject Emmy poverty, please remember that as still-alive human beings, any of them are still capable of winning Emmys, it just hasn't happened yet. Here is a selection of notable people who HAVE NOT won a Emmy:

As you can see, sometimes the world is an outrage. So too, sometimes, are the Emmys.

One of the most important aspects of the Emmys is the Emmys fashion that the celebrities wear to the Emmys. All of the top designers in the world loan out their best dresses to the ladies and gentlemen of Hollywood so that their fashions can be seen by everybody, including reporters, papa rotsy, and viewers watching the broadcast on their televisions or Kindle Fires. Sometimes getting a picture of your new dress in the paper can really help a designer's business, so it's no wonder. Meanwhile the celebrities try and compete to see who is the most beautiful in the face and body and the results are normally posted on a sheet of paper that is tacked up in the alley behind the Nokia Theater on the following Monday. Here is a photo of all the hottest and newest Emmy fashions and trends:

Expect to see a lot of these looks at the Emmy Ceremony this coming Sunday.

The one thing that will always be true about the Emmys is that the celebrities will be arriving in style. It is well-known that there aren't enough white limousines in Hollywood for all of the celebrities to have their own, so a celebrity needs to book their white limo at least three weeks in advance. Unlucky celebrities who neglected to reserve white limos for themselves this year include: Hugh Jackman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Rashida Jones, Alex Trebek, Olympic gold-medalist Gabby Douglas, and Ernest Borgnine (deceased). They will now all need to carpool.

One thing that TV viewers may not know about is that for the celebrities who go to the Emmys, the red carpet experience is crucial to having an experience there. Outside of the Nokia Theater, the TV celebrities will be confronted by throngs of reporters, all trying to get the scoop:

Some of these journalists are from places like: Entertainment Tonight, TMZ, US Weekly, Inside Edition, A Current Affair, Access Hollywood, Forgive or Forget?, AskJeeves, The Insider, E!, and sometimes even Kickin' It with Byron Allen. But what you need to know is, it doesn't really matter where the reporter comes from, they are all JACKALS. All they care about is scoop scoop scoop. That's why they shout and scream themselves hoarse at celebrities passing on the red carpet, so that they can be the first to get all the scoop. Sometimes celebrities want to be on camera and will give up morsels of scoop to whomsoever shouts the loudest at them. But other times the celebrities just want to be left alone and have their pictures taken. That won't stop a reporter. Reporters are like junkies, and cannot be trusted when there are scoops to be had. Nobody knows this better than a celebrity, but if you find yourself in a red carpet situation, BE CAREFUL. This is never more true than at the Emmys.

The main reason that TV celebrities enjoy attending the Emmys is not for the Emmys, the speeches, the fashions, or even the comma roddery. No, it's for the swag bags. One of Hollywood's best kept secrets is that the more successful a celebrity becomes, the less they pay for anything ever, and all of the items they receive—from jewelry to household cleansers to computer software—come in a "swag bag." A swag bag is a bag of items given to celebrities by companies who want to show their appreciation for the celebrities' hard work. Below is an example of the types of swag bags given out at last year's Emmy celebration:

The most important question you may be thinking to yourself right now is, "Are the Emmys important, I'm kind of tired/busy." It is a good question and worthy of discussion.

On conclusion, the Emmys are an annual event that happens almost every year. All of the dramas and comedies of the season take home trophies for their efforts, including many of our favorite TV stars. But despite who wins or loses, one thing is always clear: It is a win-win situation for the television viewers at home (or at wi-fi hot spots). Because the Emmys are a TV event full of spectacle and humor, in fact they are a lot like the Oscars but about TV. So this Sunday night, when you are asking yourself why the Emmys are on every single TV and laptop nearby, now you know.

Now that you have read this exposé of the Emmys, it's time to talk about what we've learned.

... Who are the Emmys for?

... Should the Emmys happen more than once a year?

... What do you think about Emmys fashion?

... Should people in jail or prison be allowed to watch the Emmys?

... Are you going to watch the Emmys? (Are you in jail?)

... Are the Emmys important?

... What is your favorite Emmy memory?

... Who is your favorite Emmy snub?

... Are you allowed to watch TV where you live?

... Are you a celebrity, and if so, are you going to win an Emmy this year?
