“Matchup Problems” finds Anne setting Ryan up with a recent widow—and then competing for her affections when said widow turns out to have designs on both of them. Geez, guest-star Courteney Cox, does fidelity between former sitcom spouses count for nothing anymore? These are dark times we live in. Dark, sexy times.

New Girl
The passing of a relative prompts a Miller family reunion in “Chicago,” and since Nick’s mom is Margo Martindale and his younger brother is Nick Kroll, the gang is sure to be glad they tagged along to share in the shenanigans. Jess will probably treat Mrs. Miller more gently than Keri Russell did a few weeks ago, anyway.

SEASON 4 FINALE, 9pm, Syfy
Face Off
The final three are whisked away to Vegas to design waterproof styles for the stage show Le Reve: The Dream. Then the season’s winner will be crowned, only to shock everyone with the reveal that he's Nicolas Cage posing as an ambitious professional makeup artist.

Body of Proof
Romance has its ups and its downs, as Kate experiences in “Fallen Angel.” Sometimes you meet a dashing man at a political event, partake in some invigorating flagrante delicto, and that’s that. Other times you discover that the guy is probably tied to a young girl’s murder, and you have to call on your cop friends (like Megan) to get to the bottom of things. C’est l’amour, mes amis.

Cougar Town
The cul-de-sac crew awakens to the unexpected joys of aging when an elderly couple buys Grayson’s house and joins their midst. Elsewhere in “This Old Town,” Travis searches for a Penny Can partner, and Bobby’s latest flop spurs him to rechristen his boat, possibly as the S.S. Shop Target for Great Savings on All Your Favorite Brands.

Justified
Having eluded the Detroit mafia in Harlan, Raylan tries to get the Drew Thompson case back on track in “Peace of Mind.” Accomplishing that means spiriting Ellen May away from the clutches of Limehouse—before Boyd can get to her. (Also, too, it probably means shooting people.)

What to watch on Wednesday, September 26...

Tonight we bear witness to just under a dozen premieres—and most of them aren't reality! And here I was starting to think the world had forgotten about scripted television. Take a look at all that we have to look forward to tonight:

SEASON 4 PREMIERE, 8pm, ABC
The Middle
I don't know why, but I feel like this has been on way longer than four seasons. It's just so comfortably familiar. In "Last Whiff of Summer" Frankie starts to feel a little too nostalgic about her youthful summers while Axl sacrifices his to attend summer school. Not only that, but Frankie also tries to pressure her kids into telling her which parent they love best. Meanwhile, Sue makes an effort to bond with her father and Brick grows a single tomato. Good for Brick!

TWO-HOUR SEASON 14 PREMIERE, 9pm, NBC
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
In the two-hour long "Lost Reputation, Above Suspicion" Cragen gets arrested after a prostitute shows up dead, and while authorities figure out what's really going on, the squad gets an interim captain who's a little too strict for comfort. And as Cragen does get investigated, suspicious eyes turn to the entire precinct. Also, Cassidy continues working undercover in a prostitution ring.

SEASON 4 PREMIERE, 9pm, ABC
Modern Family
Well if it isn't the show that swept the Emmys yet again! Whether you love or hate the superfluous attention it got on Sunday, one thing's for certain: It's back on television. (And you thought I was going to comment on the quality). In tonight's premiere, "Bringing Up Baby," Jay celebrates his bazillionth birthday and as is customary doesn't want to be bothered, but Phil decides to take him fishing, instead—and that turns out to be a great idea (sarcasm). Also, Gloria finally figures out how to tell him she's pregnant, Dylan "temporarily" moves in with the Dunphys, and Cameron and Mitchell think about adopting... a cat.

SERIES PREMIERE, 9:30pm, ABC
The Neighbors
Well, it's a show about aliens, I'll give it that. In the series opener, married couple Mary and Debbie Weaver finally make that big transition to the 'burbs and they think they've found the perfect gated community where their family can settle down. Of course, as soon as they figure out their neighbors are aliens they start to question their decision.

MID-SEASON PREMIERE, 10pm, Comedy Central
South Park
Back after a six-month break, South Park is coming back and I can only assume it's swingin'. In tonight's "Sarcastaball" Randy decides to spearhead a campaign to prevent head injuries in Football, and even though the execution of his ideas clouds the entire way the game is played, the new version of the game becomes a national sensation and one of South Park's students becomes an instant pro. Can you guess which one?

There was good news all around at ABC Family today unless your name is Jane By Design. The teen version of ABC renewed Melissa & Joey, Baby Daddy, and Switched at Birth for new seasons, and ordered more episodes of its new charmer Bunheads. As for Jane By Design? More like Jane Bye Bye. It's been canceled, says TV Line.

Melissa & Joey, starring Melissa and Joey, will be back for Season 3 in the spring, Baby Daddy's second season will also premiere in the spring, and Switched at Birth will enter its sophomore season this winter. Bunheads, the fast-talking freshman drama from Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, will extend its first-season run with more episodes starting this winter. I think. The press release was a little confusing.

Jane By Design was given a chance to improve on its initial ratings with an order of additional episodes for its first season, but the show didn't deliver. The series ended its season with a disappointing audience of 1.18 million viewers.

Yes, we live in a world where Babby Daddy gets renewed. But hey, more Bunheads! Yay!
